Cyclone threatens Mumbai one-dayer

Australia's final one-day international against India is in danger of being washed out after a cyclone alert was issued in Mumbai.

Heavy rain already cancelled the first day's play between Sri Lanka and the Indian President's XI in the city today.

The bad weather has been caused by an approaching cyclone on India's west coast.

The visitors clinched the seven-match series 4-2 with a six-wicket win in Guwahati on Sunday.

Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson were earlier relieved from duty and were to travel home before the rest of the side.

Play was scheduled to begin at 8:00pm (AEDT).

Match officials decided to reserve judgment on conditions until 5:00pm local time (10:00pm AEDT), after which they will make an inspection followed by a decision about the possibility of any play.

Mumbai Shut Due to cyclone phyan

Schools, colleges and government offices shut in Mumbai on Wednesday and government officials sounded an alert along India's western coast as a depression in the Arabian Sea intensified into a cyclonic storm.

Cyclone Phyan lay about 350 km south-southwest off Mumbai, and was moving in a north-northeasterly direction, said chief secretary of Maharashtra Johny Joseph.

Extra buses and trains have been pressed into service in the city to make sure residents reached home safely, he said.

"We are fully prepared. Disaster management cells are active and we have rescue and relief teams on standby," Joseph said.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and people living in low-lying areas have been asked to move.

Heavy to very heavy rains are expected, with wind speeds of about 80 km an hour, said Ajit Tyagi, director general of the Indian Meteorological Department.

"You can expect heavy rains, high wind speeds, rough seas and strong surges," he said, adding the storm was likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coast late in the night.

At Mumbai's airport, the country's busiest, rain and windy conditions were causing delays of up to an hour, a spokesman said.

Cyclone expected to hit Surat, Junagarh

A cyclone is expected to hit Gujarat’s south coast on Thursday morning, India’s met department said. Strong winds and heavy rainfall are likely to pound Surat and Junagadh districts in the next 48 hours.

Surat city is a prominent business centre and Veraval, where the cyclone is expected to impact in Junagadh, hosts several textile units.

A deep depresssion—a precursor to a cyclone—had formed about 470km west of Mangalore in Karnataka in the morning, the department said in a statement. Associated wind speeds are expected to touch 75km per hour (kmph) in the next 48 hours, it said.

“As of now, it’s in the same league as Aila (a cyclone that ravaged parts of West Bengal on 25 May), but it’s unlikely to be as damaging,” said director general Ajit Tyagi. That’s because the storm is likely to weaken after 48 hours, he said.

Gujarat, which boasts of India’s longest coastline, is an active fishing zone lined with several industrial units.

Aila was classified as a severe cyclonic storm, typically characterised by wind speeds ranging from 90-119kmph. Wind speed on a normal day would be between 10kmph and 15kmph and a 25kmph day would be considered windy.

BMC sounds cyclone warning

The municipality on Tuesday issued an emergency alert for those living near the city’s coastal areas, and said a cyclone could hit in the next 24 hours.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell alerted Collectors of both the island city and the suburbs, Mumbai Police and fire brigade, to keep on eye on weather bureau warnings and evacuate people, especially from slums near the coast, which are at greater danger.

If a cyclone hits, among the hardest hit will be Colaba’s Geeta Nagar, Worli village, Nariman Baug, Juhu, Versova, Seven Bungalows (Andheri), and Santacruz 17th and 18th roads.

“The BMC has also instructed assistant municipal commissioner of all wards to monitor the situation and be alert for the two to three days,” said Mahesh Narvekar, chief of the BMC’s Disaster Management Cell.

“The state government has been monitoring the situation closely since morning. I have alerted all coastal area collectors and the Mumbai municipal commissioner to gear up for heavy rainfall, which may lead to water-logging in low-lying areas,” M Ramesh Kumar, principal secretary (relief and rehabilitation) told HT.

“The cyclonic winds were 550 km from Mumbai, near Goa, during the day, but are now moving from south to north, so there is a strong possibility they could touch Dahanu,” Kumar added.

“The BMC, which had removed all water pumps after the monsoon, has been instructed to immediately put them back to handle any water logging,” Kumar said. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea along and off Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts.
