CLAT 2009 test postponed
The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), scheduled to be held on Sunday, has now been postponed after boxes containing test material were found tampered at Lucknow. Two locked and sealed steel boxes containing the test material of the all India examination were found to be tampered while they were in transit from Hyderabad to Lucknow. The examination is now likely to be conducted on May 31, though a final notification is yet to be issued.CLAT, which determines admissions to both undergraduate and post graduate courses at eleven National Law Universities across the coutnry, is being conducted by NALSAR University of Law Hyderabad this year. Speaking to Express, NALSAR Vice-Chancellor Prof Veer Singh said that on May 11, steel boxes carrying the question papers and answer booklets were handed over to courier company Blue Dart after locking and sealing them with the V-C’s personal seal. Blue Dart was assigned to deliver the boxes to 16 centres across the country.Out of these, four boxes were to be delivered to Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University (RMNLU) at Lucknow.
According to Prof Singh, Blue Dart had used its own cargo aircraft to transport the boxes from Hyderabad to Delhi, and then used Kingfisher Airlines to transport the boxes from Delhi to Lucknow. “When the boxes arrived at RMNLU at Lucknow on Wednesday morning, the Registrar found that two of the boxes had been tampered with deliberately by breaking the latches and the locks,’’ he said.
The RMNLU Registrar has filed an FIR with the Lucknow police over the incident, said Prof Singh and added that Blue Dart was chosen over other agencies despite its high cost as it had a very good reputation .“But we will now have to reconsider our decision,” he said.According to NALSAR Registrar KVS Sharma, the four locked boxes sent to Lucknow from Hyderabad was in “as is where is” condition till they reached New Delhi.
He said that the tampering might have happened while the boxes were on their way from New Delhi to Lucknow on Kingfisher Airlines flight. He also added that they an internal inquiry would be conducted and a report would be submitted in a couple of days. Sharma said with the help of airport authorities they would monitor the movement of the boxes containing the test material using the closed circuit televisions (CCTVs).
When Express contacted Blue Dart office at Hyderabad and its headquarters at Mumbai, officers said they were unaware of the incident. The new date for the test will be announced shortly after details are worked out by the Core Committee consisting of the eleven V-Cs of the National Law Universities.“We are working towards a tentative date of May 31 to hold the exam, but it is yet to be finalized,” he said.
